Following a catastrophe on Earth, theplanet is covered in a toxic fog. The crew of an orbiting space station mustdecide whether to risk their lives to get home and search for survivors or staysafe in the station's "algae symbiosis system".
'Rubikon' is the first actual science fiction film produced and shot in Austria. To secure the financial support from Austrian funding agencies, the production design team presented nearly finalized set designs alongside the project's funding application. The agencies were convinced of its feasibility upon introduction of the concept of a modular space station, with only one out of three modules designated to be constructed and subsequently re-dressed.
The ambitious production commenced in late summer of 2020 and was shot over 36 days with international cast during COVID lockdown in a makeshift studio in Vienna.
Aside from the restricted budget, the predominant challenge lay in crafting a compact space station that would carry the entire film, while simultaneously developing a coherent yet visually diverse science-fiction world.
Thanks to the manageable size of the project a close integration of set design and VFX post production was able to be closely supervised by Production Design until the very end.
Amongst many other awards, the production design of 'Rubikon' received the Austrian Film Award for 'Best Production Design' in 2023
