A mysterious force knocks the moon fromits orbit and sends it hurtling on a collision course toward earth.
Already in 2016, when 'Independence Day: Resurgence' was still in post-production, Johannes started working with Roland Emmerich on the concept of the moon as a spaceship for Emmerich's next sci-fi epic 'Moonfall'. At that time many different astro-physical concepts and world-building approaches for the culture and technology of the alien race that inhabited the moon were developed. In 2020, Production Designer Kirk Petrucelli joined the team, with Johannes assuming responsibility for the design of the moon's interior, along with the spaceships, culture, and technology of the alien race, as well as their antagonistic AI counterpart.
Production commenced in late 2020 in Montreal, with a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic before resuming in the summer of 2021. Throughout the entire production process, from pre-production to post-production, Johannes and his team at WIDESHOT Entertainment developed all designs, drawings, plans, previz-concepts, animations, and storyboards for both production and VFX. At that time 'Moonfall' marked the sixth collaboration between Johannes and Roland Emmerich to enter production.
